Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. - Lee Miller
Inspired by model-turned-artist Lee Miller*, her turbulent relationship with Man Ray, her traumatic career as a war photographer, and her subsequent retirement in the English countryside.
(*not to be confused with Trainspotter-turned-Sherlock, Jonny Lee Miller.)
- Naamloos
Instrumental. Naamloos is Dutch for “nameless”, i.e. untitled. I know this despite not speaking Dutch.
- Don’t Be That Dude
A message to dudes everywhere: If you are a dude, please don’t be THAT dude.
- Sally Six
Instrumental. A tribute to “The Sixth Sally, or How Trurl and Klapaucius Created a Demon of the Second Kind to Defeat the Pirate Pugg” – a short story from The Cyberiad, by the Polish science fiction author Stanislaw Lem.
The EP features the usual Bug Prentice suspects (Ally Craig, Ruth Goller, Stephen Gilchrist), plus guest cello from Jon Clayton on Naamloos. It was recorded by the aforementioned Jon Clayton at One Cat Studio in Brixton, and was mastered by Mark Cawthra. All songs written by Ally Craig.

We are celebrating the release of Nicholas Ray / Spoons with a headlining spot at the Bullingdon in Oxford. Unfortunately Stephen is unavailable for this gig, so Ally and Ruth will be joined on drums by James Maddren. Support acts include David Tudor, with more to be announced. Further info on facebook.

Ahead of next month’s download single release, here’s the new music video for Nicholas Ray. It was directed in suitably noir-ish fashion by Liam Martin, starring Shan Sriharan and a cast of Awkward Actors.

It’s Beatles Day on BBC Oxford, celebrating 50 years since the release of Love Me Do. We were one of five bands invited to record Beatles covers especially for the occasion. We will be playing at London’s Vortex jazz club on Saturday 18th August. Steve has a prior commitment, so we will be joined by James Maddren on drums.
Headlining is Big Cat, a group lead by our very own Ruth Goller:
Big Cat coalesce heavy riffs with melodic soundscapes – with anything being possible from members Ruth Goller (bass), Chris Montague (guitar), James Allsopp (saxophone) and Tim Giles (drums).
Bizarre blues run into dripping laments, the composed runs into the improvised. With influences ranging from Captain Beefheart to Bill Frisell to William Parker, Big Cat are constantly surprising and entertaining.

Sebastian Rochford’s latest Takeaway collaboration includes a brilliant remix by our very own Ruth Goller:
Sebastian Rochford has joined forces with British Bengali sarod player Soumik Datta for June’s edition of his singles club Days And Nights At The Takeaway. This epic, slowly unravelling piece, entitled ‘In Slow City‘, is partnered with a rework by fellow Acoustic Ladyland member, bassist Ruth Goller.
Ruth Goller’s rework has transformed the original into a charmingly peculiar Syd Barrett-like song.
A stream of the tracks was premiered on Songlines’ blog last week. All of the tracks from this series are available to stream and buy on the project’s Bandcamp.

In other Bug Prentice news, yesterday we finished the early stages of recording our album. The basic takes are done for all the songs, now it’s just a case of adding vocals and mixing the thing. Won’t be long, kids…

We recorded this Beatles cover as a birthday gift for Ally’s best friend Rachel, who has kindly consented to let the rest of you lot hear it too.
