We will be playing at London’s Vortex jazz club on Saturday 18th August. Steve has a prior commitment, so we will be joined by James Maddren on drums.
Headlining is Big Cat, a group lead by our very own Ruth Goller:
Big Cat coalesce heavy riffs with melodic soundscapes – with anything being possible from members Ruth Goller (bass), Chris Montague (guitar), James Allsopp (saxophone) and Tim Giles (drums).
Bizarre blues run into dripping laments, the composed runs into the improvised. With influences ranging from Captain Beefheart to Bill Frisell to William Parker, Big Cat are constantly surprising and entertaining.

Sebastian Rochford’s latest Takeaway collaboration includes a brilliant remix by our very own Ruth Goller:
Sebastian Rochford has joined forces with British Bengali sarod player Soumik Datta for June’s edition of his singles club Days And Nights At The Takeaway. This epic, slowly unravelling piece, entitled ‘In Slow City‘, is partnered with a rework by fellow Acoustic Ladyland member, bassist Ruth Goller.
Ruth Goller’s rework has transformed the original into a charmingly peculiar Syd Barrett-like song.
A stream of the tracks was premiered on Songlines’ blog last week. All of the tracks from this series are available to stream and buy on the project’s Bandcamp.

In other Bug Prentice news, yesterday we finished the early stages of recording our album. The basic takes are done for all the songs, now it’s just a case of adding vocals and mixing the thing. Won’t be long, kids…

We recorded this Beatles cover as a birthday gift for Ally’s best friend Rachel, who has kindly consented to let the rest of you lot hear it too. Childish Things is an annual variety show at the New Theatre in Oxford. The shows raise money for Helen & Douglas House, hospices-cum-respite care centres for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions. Previous years have seen comedy stars such as Steve Coogan, Hugh Laurie, Jimmy Carr, Rob Brydon, Bill Bailey, Jo Brand and Sean Lock entertaining the crowds.
This year, Childish Things will host its first dedicated music night on Monday 27th February. Jamie Cullum, KT Tunstall, Eliza Doolittle, Beardyman, flamenco guitarist Rafael, Pete Lawrie, Oxford-based jazz artist Theo Jackson and our very own Bug Prentice are all lined up to entertain (or, in the case of Bug Prentice, baffle) the audience. Tickets are still available here. Come along if you can, it promises to be a great night of music for a wonderful cause.

The Tim Smith benefit at Windmill Brixton was a rousing success, raising over £1300 for the Cardiacs leader’s care and recovery. It was also one of the best sets we’ve ever played, and one of the most appreciative crowds, so all in all it was a great night. This is a recorded approximation of what we sounded like:

I am delighted to announce that there will be a night worthy of laudation to benefit Cardiacs mastermind Tim Smith, taking place at the Brixton Windmill on Friday 3rd February 2012. For those of you who don’t know, Tim suffered a heart attack following one of the My Bloody Valentine gigs he attended back in 2008. This was followed by not 1 but 2 debilitating strokes. Fans and friends alike have been organising benefits to help contribute towards the costly care that Tim needs. So please, attend our evening so we can do a little towards helping raise funds for this plucky lad.
The lineup includes the following illustrious acts: William D. Drake and band, Barringtone (ex-Clor), The Trudy, Ham Legion and Bug Prentice. (Claire Lemmon was previously on the bill but sadly had to pull out due to illness.) The DJ for the evening will be Knifeworld frontman and former Cardiacs guitarist Kavus Torabi.
